The beach is not the foot!
It has dreamed of long months and we finally, lying on the sand, toes in range… But leaving your towel, don’t forget to watch where you put your feet! Sea urchins, shells, sharp, syringes, bits of glass, burns… took no vacation. Countless enemies lie in wait. Attention!
The wounds of the foot are very frequent in the summer. They are derived from marine animals such as sea urchins, shells, the bright but also external elements to the aquatic world as syringes and the ends of glass left there or brought back by the tide.
These small injuries often have the appearance of the innocuous because they are, initially, only a small cut. However, the repeated baths, sea water and walking barefoot do not facilitate healing, and it is often prudent to get the feet dry until healing.
The foot injury: what to do?
These lesions heal after total removal of the foreign body responsible for. It is therefore essential to remove, for example, fragments of sea urchin spine or small pieces of shell and, as soon as possible. This is sometimes difficult because of the depth of the wound and the friability of the foreign body (especially for the spines of sea urchins…). At the slightest doubt, and if we do not have to remove all foreign matter from the wound, it is necessary to consult a physician.
Indeed, in the case of persistence of small fragments, superinfection is almost automatic and requires an incision.
If the extraction has been successful, the disinfection must be carried out as quickly and as carefully as possible with SOAP and fresh water. Then the wound will be covered with a dressing, changed at least once a day of summer conditions (sweat, water, etc.)
In order to avoid any risk of getting tetanus, check your vaccination card prior to departure. The tetanus vaccine protects you for 10 years.
In the case of bite accidental by a syringe, left abandoned on the beach, don’t panic!Little germs and viruses are resistant to Sun and heat. What fear the people, in general, is contamination by the AIDSvirus, yet impossible through this.
However, this does not absolve you disinfect the wound (cf.), and the doctor to any doubt or concern.
The signs that need medical advice after a wound of the foot
pain appears at the level of the wound or the distance,
a swelling or redness appear around the wound,
the wound becomes hot,
the wound becomes infected,
There are other signs of infection (small glands near the wound, at the level of the groin, or even fever…).
Burning of the foot: what to do?
The sand sometimes reaches temperatures that one would not have suspected. Take therefore care to your children when they leave the umbrella. Whether it’s a burn of the soles of the feet, due to the excessive temperature of the sand, or harvested during a bonfire on the beach, the action to be taken is constant when burning: water with fresh water and running for at least 5 minutes.
If the burn is extended (greater than half of the Palm of the victim’s hand) or if it is deep, see a doctor. (cf. Burns)
And if it’s a Sun on the foot…
Very painful because the skin is thin, sunburn of the foot requires:
Apply soothing creams “after Sun”, specific for Burns emulsions, or talcum powder;
In the case of blisters, do not drill, and cover with a sterile dressing;
Drink plenty of water;
