The research against the bad cholesterol
How to reduce the level of bad cholesterol and increase good? This cruel dilemma researchers rely on several factors. In addition to the search for new drugs, they were able to focus on prevention: nutrition and physical activity. But for young victims of cardiac accident, the cause of the problem might be genetic.
Blood cholesterol is transported by the lipoprotein (FAT + protein). Certain lipoproteins, LDL, favour the formation of the atherosclerotic plaque that can lead to a blood flow filling and a heart attack or a stroke.
Others are rather beneficial because they allow the elimination of excess cholesterol in the cells: these are the HDL or good cholesterol. Protect from cardiovascular disease and reduce the risk of heart attacks.
The gene of the good cholesterol unmasked
The American company Myriad Genetics* Announces having discovered good cholesterol gene. More exactly, research identified the gene that functions abnormally in the young victims of heart disease. These people produce too much protein, CHD2 (Coronary Heart Disease 2) responsible of high levels of “bad” cholesterol and a decrease in the “good cholesterol”.
The origin of this dysfunction was determined after the genetic analysis of more than 5,000 people from 145 families, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Utah. Scientists now estimate that by blocking the expression of this gene, it will be possible to reduce bad cholesterol and increase good, preventing the onset of cardiovascular disease.

Nuts may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering bad cholesterol. Hazelnuts were already known to have this virtue, but researchers find today that the consumption of walnuts, foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, may have the same effects. According to an English study, scientists estimate nuts change how are degraded fats, reducing the level of bad cholesterol without however reducing blood lipid concentrations.
Researchers have compared, in 5 men and 13 women, the influence of addition of nuts to a normal diet and a low-fat diet. In both cases, the addition of walnuts to their diet resulted in a decline in the rate of cholesterol.
