Cardiovascular problems and travel

The holiday you are at heart but you think that it is precisely your heart keeps you at home? Note that if your cardiovascular problem is stable, you can usually go to travel. Advice before departure.

A disease of the heart can sometimes curb your enthusiasm of a world traveler, or even constitute a contraindication. However, if your state of health stability and a bit of preparation, most shifts are possible.

Contraindications to travel

Contraindications to travel

The two major problems of distant travel reside in transportation (by air, the pressure of oxygen reduction) and the sanitary conditions on the spot.

Main cardiac contraindications to air transportation:

-Decompensate heart failure or poorly stabilized by the treatment;
-Recent myocardial infarction;
-Angina (angina) unstable;
-Non-appareillé atrioventricular block (risk of severe syncope);
-High blood pressure high and poorly controlled;
-Phlebitis or recent pulmonary embolism.
On-site cardiac and hypertensive patients have a reduced adaptability. Source of dehydration, heat can aggravate a pathology. Source of hypoxia, altitude increases the heart rate. Finally, the cold can trigger attacks of angina and tensions. For travel abroad, your heart treatment may be a contraindication to taking medications preventing malaria. Therefore, carefully choose your destination based on your state of Dalton with your doctor!

Preparing for the trip

With your doctor
See your doctor at least one month before your departure. Discuss your project, it will assess the feasibility of the trip your medical file and your current clinical State. It is the most able to determine the absence of contraindication.

Once the destination is chosen, your doctor may choose to get a clinical record, or even tests. If you want to sport, it can make you spend a test (third position). If you are carrying a pace-maker, your cardiologist must verify its good working order prior to your departure, and provide you with a statement of the technical characteristics of the device, very useful in case of dysfunction;

Green light given, your doctor should write you duplicate your usual order, in English if necessary. It is possible, depending on your destination, that your treatment is adapted: decrease of diuretics in heat expected, small doses of ant platelet agents, support stockings, or preventive injection of heparin for flight in history of venous thrombosis, emergency drug (trinitrine, diuretics for rapid action, etc.). You take the necessary quantity of drugs twice. Wrap them in two separate places and protect it heat or potential excessive cold;

Will your doctor prescribe you also the usual medication for travel to your destination and your health: diarrhea (famous turista causing risks of dehydration), vomiting, fever, sickness, pain (painkillers), injuries (disinfectants, dressing ‘double skin’ for light bulbs), etc.
