The sudden deaths of infants remain difficult to explain. Since 1990, their number decreased through campaigns of prevention for the sleeping infants on their backs.

Intolerable, the sudden infant death syndrome occurs in a child in good health during his sleep and, in its first year of life, most often between two and four months. It leaves parents experiencing extreme distress and feelings of guilt.

If it is impossible to comfort a family affected by this drama, it should be recalled that, large and small, we are threatened daily by death. It can occur during sleep (the elderly often die during the night) but also at the wheel of a car or household activities… Zero risk does not exist.

The medical community does not consider as the sudden death of the infant as inevitable but instead seeks to understand this phenomenon. The autopsy and the study of the circumstances have to distinguish the unexplained deaths of the so-called dead explained. These do not fall within a single cause. They are caused by a set of risk factors: immaturity of the system of control of the vital functions, the pathologies (respiratory infections, gastro-esophageal reflux, heart…) and environmental factors (the position of the sleeping on the belly, the winter season, room temperature, smoking, exceptionally abuse – a case out of 100).

Prevention campaigns launched in France since 1994 for the “back to sleep” have helped to reduce this phenomenon. The number of sudden infant deaths rose from 1 464 cases reported (in 1991) to 539 (in 1995). This number may still decline to less than 250 cases per year. The awareness of the population must therefore continue.

Unless medical opinion, it should be sleeping baby on the back, face cleared, the body wrapped in a surpyjama, a gigot use or a turbulent. It can thus breathe freely, regulate its temperature. Block pillows, duvets, blankets and soft mattress to avoid that he buried his head. It is recommended that a temperature of the House of 18 ° C to 20 ° C (but not more) winter and daily ventilation of at least ten minutes. Moreover, not to expose the infant to cigarette smoke. Moreover, keep upright a quarter of an hour after feeding and report to the doctor suspect signs: regurgitation, vomiting, respiratory discomfort or drowsiness…

At the evocation of the danger of sudden infant death, young parents feel a legitimate fear. Probably should consider prevention as a way to limit risk and not as a source of anxiety which could disrupt their relationship to the child.
