Stress is bad for the nerves, were already known. A US study indicates that it could play a role in the occurrence of backache, especially in the inward-looking people.

Stress has long been suspected to cause back problems. Stressed people focus it more on their symptoms or then their nervousness leads it them to not use their muscles so contractures and pain? A quite original study, published in the medical journal, Spine, slice clearly support this second hypothesis and suggests that some temperament are much more exposed to this type of pathology.

good back

The authors, who work at the University of the State of Ohio, in the United States, have selected a small group of 25 students and assessed their main personality traits, to clarify in particular if they were introverted (little expressing their feelings) or outgoing. They then asked these young people to raise a load of 12 kg, at a given rate. A lumbar belt equipped with electrodes could observe what muscles were engaged in this exercise.

Full back of stress!

During part of the experiment, students were placed in particularly favorable conditions: they could listen to their favourite music and were supported by compliments and caring encouragement. In another phase of experimentation, the atmosphere was markedly less pleasant, since the experimenter complained of the performance of the students and kept reprimand them.

Results: everything depends, apparently, the character. While critics flee the Extroverts, introverts do not visible reactions demonstrate, but internally respond by Contracting their muscles of excessive and improper manner when they raise the load. They tend, among other things, to contract muscles which should normally remain at rest, with as the most adverse effect the application of forces that are no longer in the axis of the spine. Registration of muscle contractions found in these individuals, an increase of 14% of the pressure on the spine and an increase of 27% of the lateral stresses, or sufficient tension for the cause of back pain, consider the authors.

Four out of five workers suffer back

Pain lumbar or dorsal represent one of the most important causes of work-related pathology. A recent survey conducted in England indicated that four workers in five feel spinal pain, even if only a minority stops work due to the pain. The port of heavy loads is of course often involved, and professions of handlers, paramedics, nurses and workers are particularly exposed. The results collected by the team of Ohio indicate that stress and the poor working conditions can contribute significantly to these chronic disorders, especially among people who keep to their frustration. Beyond this detail, this study confirms, if there were still necessary, the negative effects of stress on health.
