During the 20 years of LASIK, the technique of laser surgery most frequently used to correct myopia (lack of perception of objects by far), (lack of perception of objects closely) hyperopia and astigmatism, the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons) launches awareness campaign “LASIK, safe in our hands” **, with the hope of reassuring people still reluctant.
With the advent of Lasik, corneal refractive defects support has evolved significantly: this technique is painless, with an almost immediate effect, and surgical suites are minimal. RID forever of his glasses… until the presbyopia. Fact Doctissimo point on this revolutionary technique that repairs the vision of hundreds of thousands of people each year.
Lasik, said between 20 and 40 years old
Lasik Surgery to repair the cornea refractive anomalies, either the myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia. In the case of myopia, this technique is to raise a very fine lamella of the cornea called pane and to remove below a layer whose thickness is a function to correct myopia. These two steps can be carried out using two successive lasers, femtosecond laser then the Excimer. Reserved for those whose nearsightedness is scalable, it is therefore contraindicated in less than 20 years, but particularly indicated between 20 and 40 years old.
As with any surgical procedure, the indications must however be well asked, recalled Dr. Joseph Colin (surgeon ophthalmologist CHU de Bordeaux) at the press conference of the ESCRS, under penalty of loss of the vision itself functional complications such as loss of vision quality, or even. “It operates between-1 and -8 diopters of myopia.”
Between-8 and -10, you can still operate if the cornea is thick. “Beyond-10, the cornea is too refined, which would result in a risk of instability of the corneal tissue”, which would lead to a loss of vision. Hyperopic which the anomaly is between + 1 and + 4 diopters can also consider surgery to Lasik, “but + 5 diopters, the result is unstable, the cornea becomes too domed and the quality of the vision is not satisfactory”, warned the specialist. Finally, this technique now applies very well to people suffering from astigmatism, the surgeons can intervene “up to 6 dioptres of difference between the two meridians”.
95% of satisfied patients
According to a study to be published soon in a specialized magazine, which combined a quality of life scale and a satisfaction survey some 300 patients in a Parisian centre, 95% of the participants are satisfied with the intervention. Attention for Visual performance, for correction, for independence, freedom and the impact on the image of self that she brings, the procedure comes however of two recurring sharps: the persistence of Visual parasites (kind of halo around a luminous point) that disrupt the night driving and an uncomfortable dry eye. “This phenomenon is declining in a few months, assures Dr. Colin.” “Parasites Visual, most do not feel them, others deflator and a minority obnubile on it”. For ophthalmologists, the accuracy of the correction by Lasik is one of its strengths. “Some are not fully corrected but are still very satisfied”, reports Dr. Jean-Jacques Saragoussi (surgeon at the clinic of the vision, Paris). For the latter, the overall satisfaction of patients depends on both of the objective results in terms of improving the quality of vision, expectations of patients, the image they have of them, the impact of the intervention on their activities… But he said: “the quality of life of ametropes [people with a refraction anomaly] again identical, after Lasik, to that of the emmetropes [without Visual anomaly]”.
Too many expectations is a contraindication
Among the contraindications to Lasik, a thin cornea (or which flattens) may be distorting change the quality of vision, or even lead to loss of vision and cause of dissatisfaction. Corneal and retinal diseases are also major contraindications: for Dr. Jean-Louis Arne (ophthalmologist at Purpan hospital, Toulouse), “one of the risk factors is the ignorance of a pathology pre-existing as a Keratoconus form defrauds, an infectious disease or pregnancy”.
