As the mercury shoots up, air conditioners, sunscreen creams, cooler fabrics, etc. catch our attention. Do we really pay as much heed to increasing our fluid intake for maintaining proper fluid balance in our bodies? Most of us make no conscious efforts to avoid dehydration, which could have severe consequences. Human body is composed of about 70% water and even a 5% loss of water causes nausea and irritability. If dehydration gets as severe as 10%, it leads to dizziness, unresponsiveness, convulsions and tingling in limbs. Severe dehydration leads to worsened symptoms, which eventually prove fatal.

Water

Nothing can replace pure plain water when it comes to its thirst quenching and rehydrating effects. Depending on the physical activity that we get involved in, our fluid needs may differ. Being ‘well hydrated’ is a relative term. How much water a person needs is decided by the weather, physical activity, clothes, medication (if any) and also the individual’s metabolism. Though no other source of water rehydrates you as much as plain water does, a number of drinks and foods serve as rehydrating agents. If the taste of plain water keeps you from having a lot of it, add a teaspoon of lemon for adding a pleasant flavor to it.

In addition to water, we take in about 20% of water from the food we eat. Many fruits such as cantaloupes, water melons, oranges and grapes have copious amount of water. Fruit salad makes a great hydrating cocktail. A few veggies like cucumber, tomato and cabbage are also high in water content. While most others do not have very large percent of water, vegetable soups can be some smart ways of ‘eating the water’. Besides being hydrating, fruits and vegetable soups are full of health and keep you light and active in hot sultry climate.
