A study in Parisian schools in 1994, indicated that 6.1% of students in grades 3 had a known asthma and that 10.9% regularly had respiratory symptoms for at least one year, although the diagnosis of asthma has ever made. In addition, the measurement of peak expiratory flow rate (reflecting characteristic of asthma, bronchial obstruction) revealed abnormally low results for 13.4% of children. Asthma: contributing factors

Affecting 300 million people, asthma is the most common chronic disease in the world. But its origin remains partly mysterious. It is estimated today that this disease does not have a single cause but stems from several factors.

Genetic predisposition, allergies, respiratory infections, passive smoking… Discover the factors favouring the appearance of asthma.

Genetic predisposition
Asthme facteurs favorisantsAsthma is related to hereditary factors, as sometimes evidenced by a large number of people within the same family. Studies on twins and sick families stressed a significant genetic influence in its development. Have a double asthmatic parent indeed the risk to suffer also. But it is impossible to say it is a hereditary disease, because there is no single gene responsible. In the context of this heterogeneous disease, the contribution of a single gene appears even minimal. Continue reading “Asthma: contributing factors”

Peak flow meters

For asthmatics, measurement of expiratory flow to follow the progression of the disease. This tracking is an indicator of the effectiveness of the treatment and a means of predicting the occurrence of crises. Find out with Doctissimo everything you need to know on this device that has no shortage of breath.

According to Dr. Jean-François Dessanges Cochin Hospital, “all doctors should systematically practice the measurement of peak expiratory flow in all patients as easily taken the voltage.” But this screening exercise is not yet widespread.

Who should use this test?
Les debitmetres de pointe. These devices are intended for all adult asthmatics or children from the age of five years. Below this age, the extent of the breath is hard to impose. Neuralgia of lumbar origin: of lumbago in the herniated disc
When you have a neuralgia of lumbar origin, it is often the core of the vertebral disc – or a fragment of it – just be expelled from the fibrous ring. This action releases enzymes (including phospholipase A2) to very strong inflammatory power. The pain would be, first and foremost, the result of inflammation of the nerve root by these enzymes. Allergy to the doctor’s Office testing

These methods have a real craze since fifteen years. Their safety, speed of the answers they provide, the possibility of multiplying them, make a precious auxiliary of allergic Diagnostics.

What are they?
The tests have to interest to simulate visibly, on the skin, the conflict generated by the allergic sensitization within the body. The tests come as a result of the clinical investigation by the practitioner. If sometimes the diagnostic orientation is evoked by the simple Clinic: hay typical fever, asthma to animal dander or dust mites, food urticaria or medicated, in many cases several factors to varix and complicate the process. Increasingly, physicians are faced this type of situation and must refine their diagnosis.

Responsible for 90% of lung cancers

Tobacco is responsible, directly or indirectly, 60 000 deaths per year (twenty-five thousand for cancer). On average, a smoker live, on average, eight years less than someone who does not smoke.

Tobacco, irritating the Mucosa (lining) of the bronchi, promotes the occurrence of chronic bronchitis. It is a progressive obstruction of the bronchial tubes with hypersecretion. If you cough and you spit three months per year and, for two years, you have chronic bronchitis. These symptoms sometimes cause a relative gene. However, they show a partial destruction of your bronchial tissues. You should know that chronic bronchitis can be complicated and lead to respiratory failure. 15 to 40 000 deaths per year in France are due to this disease and its complications.

lung cancers

If you are a smoker, you can estimate your risk by calculating the number of packages-year (PA). It is the number of cigarettes smoked each day, multiplied by the number of years during which you smoked, divided by 20. For example, smoking 20 cigarettes a day for five years represents a consumption of 5 PA. 10 cigarettes a day for 20 years are 10 PA. People who smoked more than 20 PA will present in 50% of cases chronic bronchitis. Continue reading “Responsible for 90% of lung cancers”

Drug abuse intervention

Children are the forgotten drug? That was the theme of a symposium, organized by the national Union of the pharmaceutical industry on October 5, 2000. Unfortunately, it can only respond positively to this question. Because the inadequate packaging and medicines designed for adults today are the common lot of the majority of the young patients. Where hope to tackle this problem by setting up a European regulatory urging industrialists to make paediatric drugs.

Drug abuse intervention

Large capsules difficult to swallow, tablets to be break into small pieces or crushed, it is every day that pediatricians must “tinkering” solutions to enable their small patients to take care of. When they do not, prescribe non-authorisation for placing on the market, a drug normally reserved for adults – with all the consequences you can imagine legally – when a complication occurs. In total, “three-quarters of drugs used in children and more than 90% of those who are employed in a hospital emergency have not been evaluated home”, says Annie Wolf, responsible for the Mission of orphan and paediatric medicines to the Ministry of employment and solidarity. Youth cancer

Adolescents and young adults are of worse prognosis than those of children less than 15 years. Faced with this situation, the Cancer Plan 2009-2013 is committed on specific objectives. Dr. Nadège Corradini, Pediatric oncologist, presents the approach committed to Nantes with the support of the League against cancer.

In 1998, the first States-General of cancer patients and their families, organized by the League, had stressed the special place of older teens and young adult (AYA) in the care system, with notably a real difficulty of social and educational support, isolation in adult or pediatric medicine that goes up to a feeling of double exclusion… Today, the specificity of these cancers is better taken into account, including in the Plan Cancer 2009-2013.

Better to treat the cancers of adolescents and young adults
Cancer is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults (15-25 years), after road accidents and suicides. The prognosis of these cancers is significantly worse than among children under 15 years for most tumors and their support proves to be very heterogeneous. How to explain this worse prognosis? “Today, their support is very heterogeneous. There is also a low rate of inclusion of these age groups in clinical trials and little identified care. Finally, the treatments are often less well followed at this age,”said Dr. Nadège Corradini, specialist paediatrician in Oncology. Continue reading “Youth cancer”
